I think that the blurriness and the composition go hand in hand -- that the pill underneath the light isn't necessarily bad if it's out of focus, what you've done is put all of the pills on the same plane of vision, which makes the piece a little flat. Although I don't really know the dynamics of the space in which you were working, I think you could have played a lot more with the angle of the camera and where exactly the camera was in relation to the space on which the pills were sitting. I think that's part of the reason why people were saying that they liked the other version more.

The colour contrast between the deep blue and the very noticeable orange and white is stunning, and really does draw attention to the message of the photo itself. I don't exactly know what kind of pills these are just by looking at them, but I feel that the photo speaks a little bit to the effects that the pills might have on a body. I think that if you were to combine the colour and mood of this photo with the composition and execution of the other photo, you would have a really, really nice piece of work here.
